I am no pilot, just an aviation enthusiast, but how could you not know your destination airport was not open? Wouldn't Eurowings ground control staff know that from their counterparts at the destination?

Normally, the flight dispatcher would check the necessary airports for NOTAM’s (Notice To Airmen) for local airport information and the Captain/FO should do the same prior to departure. This should have been caught way before the crew even showed for the flight.

Well another second rate airline just one flight away from a crash if this is the best they can do.
