I knew the pilot well - reports are that he declared an emergency to Atlanta center due to a fire in the cockpit. Really sad news. He was a great person.

GH - all the more tragic when it's personal huh? Sorry for your (and the other's) losses. That can be pretty rugged terrain up around those parts.

Yeah. He only just got his ATP a week or so ago. His future was so bright and he had worked so hard building hours. Such a waste. I can hear him now getting on me for my sloppy steep turns before he signed me off for my check ride. I was his first student and his first sign off.

Such a tragedy. Does anyone know how old the pilot was? I read where he had just received is ATP a week earlier. Was he working for a Charter operator to bulid time? I have several hundred hours in 55 & 58 model Barons and on more than one occasion did I have to deal with something trying to catch fire on those airplanes! They're great flying airplanes but at the same time they can be quite tempermental! My condolences to all of the families who lost loved ones.

Hi gh123,
I am so sorry for your loss - he sounds like a heck of a person and an even greater pilot (he would have enjoyed your story about steep turns) who loved to fly building up hours.
Sympathies to all the families and friends.
Can't even imagine your grief.
Greg
