ATR Formally Launches ATR 42-600S (Short Take-Off and Landing)
On Wednesday 9 October, at a press conference held at the ERA General Assembly, ATR’s CEO Stefano Bortoli has officially announced that the company will soon be welcoming a new member in its aircraft family. Great story, Canuck. I would not be surprised if Viking's ears didn't "perk up" when ATR made this noise. Their "new" DHC-6 Twin Otter is selling well, they have plans for the Dash-8, and I'm thinking a "new" DHC-5 Buffalo may come to fruition. They already had plans for it back in 2006-2007
The Buffalo is also for unimproved strips, which I think the ATR will never be able to do, nor do they claim that they can do.
Umm..I've seen Air North's ATR-42 land/takeoff, many times, on a gravel runway up in Dawson Yukon. That runway just got paved in May. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUJIXPVXZo0
Just to add, YOC, YMA and a smathering of other northern airports dont have improved strips.
Nice to see others who live in a world of gravel and even grass strips.
I have flown the ATR many times to and from unimproved runways. The ATR has many faults that you can criticize it for but let’s stick to facts. My biggest concern is de-icing which the manufacturers of the ATR still have not adtessed. Many norther airports lack de-icing equipment and unlike the Beaver, the Otter and even the old but reliable Dash 8 the ATR cannot be flown safely in conditions that can lead to icing.
One big problem with Turbo Prop A/C and deicing is the amount of Bleed Air available. They can pressurize and run the packs, but when it comes to a hot wing there is just not enough left over... Where the boots can peal off Ice once it has begun to build, it cannot keep it off and you cannot have it on continually... It must cycle. Another issue of the boots is that over time they get Pin Holes which allows water in and it freezes causing even more problems. Boots have to be replaced frequently due to Pin Holes. I worked with a bunch of those on the Dash 8.... Lightning and Static in the air plays real havoc with them.
Crap - never had troubles with de-icing systems on Dash7s, flew 10.000 hrs in really rough winters. It just takes experience to use it properly
Those boots in operation inherently attract Static and that is where it comes from. If you had very little trouble that means your maintenance crew was taking care of the plane the way it was designed just the way we did with the Dash 8's. We had very little trouble as well, but the boots were issues, even though we kept them to where most of the pilots were unaware. Good preventative Maintenance can save the crews and maintenance a lot of headaches!
The crew chief secured the baby and over the roar of both engines running pointed to seats for the nurse and I to strap in. We moved forward for a short distance, turned as he wound full power and suddenly we we rolling but not for long as his lifted the nose, cleared the snowplow and we were airborne for the trip to Halifax where the weather was much better.
The weather at their home base Summerside on PEI was essentially as they had just left so a warm night of naval hospitality for our Air Force colleagues was in order in the YAW wardroom. Baby did well and fortunately I had a spare pair of underwear in my office in the base hospital.
