I never knew boeing considered this sparkie. It’s interesting that playing with the handling characteristics was thought of to keep pilot training consistent. Would it have been MCAS? Hum.

I saw a picture of a shortened 747. It looked really strange. Could that be the reason?

Not really. The 747SP was shortened, but it had four engines. For the person who wrote the original article: the 727 did not have under wing engines.
