I liked the service better in the old days of paper tickets. If your ticket said OK in the status box, you were good to fly that flight. If you wanted, you could take that Delta ticket over to the TWA counter, and they would be thrilled to accept it, no extra charge.

If you had the ticket, you were in charge of what flight and airline. Now the airlines hold you hostage, and cancel onward reservations if you take another flight, or stay an extra day in paradise.

Good service was expected from every airline, and they competed hard for passengers. The meals were decent, they interlined baggage with every carrier at an airport. South West now expects you to schlep your own bag.

I once flew RDU-MIA-GRU-BSB, when we went to the actual airline office to confirm our return flights we were told our reservations had been cancelled because we had supposedly "missed" our RDU-MIA flight. Fortunately for us they believed us when we told them we were in fact on the plane, unless we had magically transported the 5000 miles between RDU and BSB.
