Port Authority: Owls struck 5 planes at NY area airports
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says that over the past two weeks five planes at JFK, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia airports have been struck by snowy owls. The agency released a statement Monday saying it is working with the state Department of Environmental Conservation to immediately implement a program to trap and relocate snowy owls that pose a threat to aircraft. I'm amused by the wording in this article, and its headline. "…five planes… have been struck by snowy owls." It makes it sound as though the owls are vicious, mean creatures, bent on deliberately attacking poor, innocent little aircraft.
Just saw something about this on the local news saying how important it is to watch out and if need be care for Snowy Owls in the area since they are all out of their normal range this year. The very next sentence covered how the aiport authority had already shot three of them
So, the aircraft team is still up by 2 (Planes 5, Port Auth 3, birds -8)
I don't give a hoot if they feather the props... Now that the jokes are aside... Birds are a big problem... Every week I have to work at least one bird strike. Latest one grounded a plane for a week due to leading edge damage. 2 Weeks ago we had one to go through the radome and did
Sorry.. I did not click post... to continue.
substantial damage to the forward pressure bulk head and required extensive repair. Birds do a lot of damage.

Job security?
LOL, I have plenty of Job Security... I don't need the birds helping out... the cold weather is doing plenty... Up to including batteries that are so cold that you have to put hot air on them just to start the APU.
My home airport is part of a state park. It abounds with deer, turkeys, eagles, hawks, geese, ducks, etc. It's surrounded by Ky lake and marshland. A hunters paradise, but no hunting. I feel like I'm the hunted on every t/o and landing. Lol, for now.
I know an airport in West Virginia that way that is towards the south eastern part... Can't tell you how many times I have heard of Deer, Foxes, and other animals that either got tangled in the gear or prop... Not a pretty site, and for the mechanic to remove it... Well... That is another whole topic...
