SUD-EST SE-210 Caravelle (EC-AXU)

Did that PAN AM 727 come over to Dusseldorf from the States or was it stationed in Europe? Technical stops on the way over? It just seems surprising to me that if that 727 had the legs for such flights why everyone is so surprised that we're now using 757's, 737's and A321's etc for trans-Atlantic crossings!
