Sorry to disappoint the Mustang lovers (and I am one!) - but the Corsair is the most awesome fighter aircraft of WWII.

Better yet, read ‘Pappy’ Boyington’s autobiography, “Baa Baa Black Sheep”. I still have the copy I bought in 1958, ,- $.50 - and when my SIL and I were the museum in Quantico a few years ago, I purchased a copy for him. I think I paid $8.95.
