The last Martin Mars water bomber will fly again.
The famed Martin Mars bomber, a massive water tanker aircraft used for fighting fires for more than a half-century in British Columbia, is expected to make its last flight this fall when it will be flown to North Saanich for a permanent display in the B.C. I love this plane and have watched it take off, fly, swoop, scoop, dump and fly all day long over Sproat Lake on beautiful Vancouver Island. It was a sad day when the BC Government didn’t renew its contract with Coulson Aviation and the Mars planes moved outside BC. I’m thrilled that Hawaii Mars is flying home to the island and will be retired to the Victoria Aviation Museum— a great place where she’ll be well loved and admired forever.
Moving back to the island in 2026 and wondering is the new display will actually be completed by then. Never got to see the big bird fly I’m still looking forward to seeing this old bird when she’s resting.

It’s supposedly being flown back to Victoria in Fall 2024 for installation at the Victoria Aviation Museum
The aircraft is being prepped for 1 flight from Port Alberni to Victoria BC. the prep is scheduled to take about 6 months
Only time I ever saw it flying on a fire was on my honeymoon. There was a lumber mill on fire outside or close to Vancouver BC. Stopped to watch it, suddenly it came overhead on its drop pass that took place just beyond the road where we were standing. Never had I seen something this huge just a few hindered feet or less above my head.
