Southwest Airlines’ Pilots Prepare for Possible Airline Acquisition Amid Speculation

Размещено

The pilot union of Southwest Airlines, SWAPA, has strategically enlisted the services of several law firms in anticipation of the airline potentially pursuing the acquisition of another carrier. This move underscores the union’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and securing the future of Southwest pilots in the event of a major corporate transaction. (www.airguide.info) Ещё...

Alaska, Sun Country and Avelo are the only names I can think of. I doubt they would want to jump with an Airbus operator unless they're at the point where they are ready to make a huge shift to its culture.

Whoever it may be, I can't see the Justice Department green-lighting it. Especially since they recently shut down the Frontier/Spirit & Jet Blu/Spirit tie-up.

Even if they do try, I think Alaska is now too firmly embedded with AA, even more so now that they are in the OneWorld alliance. I could see some significant push-back on that one as well.

And Alaska has this deal with Hawaiian in the works.

The pilot union will declare "unsafe conditions" but those conditions will miraculously disappear when they get a pay raise.

So, is the airline of potential acquisition sorta kinda north and west of SouthWest's Texas home, say maybe as far north as Alaska?? 😉

Whoever it is they are going to have to be flying nothing but 737's like Southwest. Would make things so much smoother in the transition.

Alaska is the only choice IF they want to stay with an all Boeing fleet. How long will it be before Alaska dumps Hawaiian's Airbus?

I doubt they would rush into too quickly, especially given the fiasco they faced with their schedule following the MAX 9 groundings. Until the MAX 10 is cleared, and start arriving, I suspect they'd keep them.

The other thing to consider is that HA has an active freight contract with Amazon flying the A330, and I doubt they would want to lose that.

Finally, the only airframes they have now that can do something other than inter-island hopping is their 18 A321neo's, 24 A330s, and 1 787. With only 11 more 787s on order, they would have nowhere near as many aircraft as they need. To be sure, they could augment with craft from the main AS fleet, but at what cost?

Given their intent to continue to operate HA and AS as two distinct and separate entities, I wouldn't expect to see a seismic shift in their fleet plans. That said, I still doubt the JD would allow SW to merge with the AS/HA group.

No way Jose! The boarding is just a bit bovine in nature however, once onboard, the service and attitude are better than the majors. If you want to pay extra you can get in the first group and get a free drink just like the majors. Also, the seat pitch on the whole airplane is superior to basic economy at UA.

The glory days of air travel are long gone and it's a race to the bottom everywhere. Unless you're traveling first class, the boarding experience sucks across the board. I've flown a lot over the years for work and play, and constantly as a child even since my father flew for Continental. I'm confident in saying Southwest is no better or worse in this regard, just different.

Jay C, or whoever , I’ve never understood how boarding first is a perc for first class. If I’m up front with an assigned seat, I want to board last and not be on the plane any longer than possible. Not to mention having 250 people walk past me.

Board first alleviates anxieties about “being left behind” or being separated from your stuff. Board last and you may not be able to find any overhead space for your carryons. Lastly boarding first is all part of the illusion that you are special…

First class overhead storage is reserved for first class.

Everything else you mentioned makes then a customer for snowflake airlines.

It's been a race to the bottom ever since the mid-1970s.

I’d except automobiles from that generalisation. Today’s auto’s are vastly superior to the Detroit abomination’s of the ‘70’s and ‘80’s…

As a former shop owner for 14 years, I beg to differ. Your modern fleet isn't going to be around in 20 years, let alone 30-50. Many of those cars from the 70's-80's still are, and are still running.

My '86 Grand Marquis I bought in 2003 with 68k miles. It has 305K on her today - original engine, transmission, rear end, and in-tank electric fuel pump! YES, it's all original! I can guarantee you, there isn't a car built the past 17 years that'll have a working fuel pump in 15 years, with the exception of some early Flex Fuel GM vehicles. They had to over-engineer those pumps to withstand lots of water, due to ethanols propensity for absorbing it.

Speak for yourself Jose. I'll choose SWA everytime over AAnus and have not had an unpleasant experience with SWA. I know it happens and the Dec 2022 crisis was a debacle of their own making; but there is so little margin in the whole commercial system that even small problems quickly erupt into major ones.

I think SWA will expand its overseas routes. No clue as to which airline but having 737s isn’t a must. Other acquisitions used MD 80s.
