USAF KC-135 tanker saves F-16 fighter over ISIL territory
U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft crew saved an F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet pilot from ejecting over Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-held territory in 2015, which could have resulted in the Airman's captivity or death. Good old DC10's converted to a KC 135 tanker there good aircraft
Gosh no. I flew in the KC135's 50 yrs ago and ten years before that in KC-97's (1952-55 in Thule).
Huh! No DC-10 here, it's the old 707 airframe.
The 135 is not a 707, but a Dash 80 (B367-80). It is shorter than the extremely well built 707. Omega (a private contractor) is flying 707 tankers with the USMC/USN on contract basis. They have four and are acquiring more for transition to tankers.
Thanks for correcting me. I always thought the KC-135 was just a 707. The USMC also uses C-130s as tankers but I think anybody with a drogue system can supply juice to and Marines and Navy.
Better to use Omegas fleet than a 130. 18000 gals
Except when you're operating out of the dirt and you have to have support now. There is a place for both systems, but I wonder how Omega likes operating in a high threat environment.
