Boeing 707-100 (58-6970) - There are many photos of this aircraft already in the FA gallery because this former Air Force One presidential jet is now on display in the Air Park at the Museum of Flight in Washington state, but the only picture in the gallery showing this VC-137B (special variant of a Boeing 707) when it was in actual use as SAM 970 is this old Kodak 620 film snap I took at JFK in the later 1960s. Although this aircraft was the first actual jet to be used as the POTUSs Air Force One, by the time I snapped it here at Kennedy it had been replaced by SAM 26000. When I clicked it; however, it was still being used for official government trips and it was designated SAM (Special Air Mission) 970. I got another photo of it over 40 years later when I visited the Museum of Flight in 2009 and discovered it there on display in the Air Park.

Check out all those old limos ... and that bus sure does "date" this shot, too. (Grin) The only place you can see an old bus like that now is in a museum ... and in old movies. (Big grin) But there is something else of interest in this snap. That's an Air France B707 in the background.

Just received an email ... after reading it, I figure I may as well reply here in case anyone else is also wondering. I did not say this aircraft was the first Air Force One, I said it was the first "jet" to be used as AF1. And it was. It was replaced in the early 60s by SAM 26000, so by the time I caught it here at JFK it was no longer being used by the POTUS (thus, it was no longer serving as AF1), but it had been the very first VC-137B (B707) to be designated AF1 when the POTUS was aboard. Hopefully, I've explained it better here than I did above. (Wave)

Nice pic Gary-love the old cars and ground equipment. Thanks for the post!

Very nice snap Gary! Even though it may not have been the current AF1 at the time, it must have been a thrill to catch.
