NYC needs runways, but 'ghost airport' stays quiet

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's airspace is known for its chronic flight delays, and planners have been looking for new runway space to ease congestion. Some aviation buffs say they have a solution, j . . . (flightaware.com) Ещё...

I wonder if that is the same Paul Freeman who heads the Abandoned and Little-Known Airfields project at www.airfields-freeman.com...

Anyway, outside of this field, wasn't KSWF repurposed from the AFB it used to be, to ease the congestion at the 3 main airports in the New York area?

How much of JFK's limit is due to its very inefficient runway, taxiway and terminal layout?

I am not familiar with the area from the ground, but one issue the author did not address is vehicular traffic. The only access to a major highway from Floyd Bennett Field is via the relatively small Shore Parkway, leading right back to JFK to get on I-678. Also, would the airports share the required parking lots, shuttles, etc?

I would prefer to remove any regional traffic from JFK. Or you can replace 3 CRJs with 1 B737 and that way reduce load on runways. I don't like to see so many small airplanes in such big hub. Same applicable for EWR.

Open the Airport & move the regional jets there.

It could even become a VIABLE General aviation airport for those of us who cant stand to pay 8 bucks for avgas @ KTEB.

Floyd Bennett Field is a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and it will remain so. It will not become an airport again.

Stewart Airport:SWF lat : 41.4869 lon : -74.0974: Former large lift AFB in Newburgh, NY 70mi north of NYC. It would be cheaper and a better investment in the region's future to put in high speed rail from NYC to Stewart & Albany beyond and let everyone who would NOT prefer the "NYC 3" for flights go through there. Even now the cab ride might take less time than the one to JFK or Newark...

High speed rail to Albany? That would finish off Amtrak on that route for sure. I can't see the Feds subsidizing a new railroad that will take revenue from their already struggling existing subsidized railroad.

Change Amtrak into a high speed rail service, you say? You have heard of Amtrak, right?

Also, there is Westchester Airport (HPN) that is somewhat under utilized. Problem with that airport is small runway and no more room for expansion. Bennett field would only work with access to rail (linking the Airtrain system). No likely or necessarily viable.

Even if the NPS were to relinquish Floyd Bennett for use as a passenger airport, news of this would cause the enviro- wackos to lose their hair.
They would claim the habitat of migratory waterfowl would be damaged. A complaint such as this is capable of stopping any proposal. It is for these reasons Floyd Bennett is no longer viable.
Clearly there are alternatives. Islip Mac Arthur and Newburgh's Stewart Airport should be expanded to handle more flights.
Stewart is not that far from mid-town Manhattan. In fact ,with traffic in mind one could travel from Stewart to Times Square in about the same time it takes to get from JFK to Times Square

Stewart-NYC as a helicopter route might be viable.

David......Please explain....
From northern NJ Stewart is a quick one hour trip up the Thruway. Or from Northwest NJ right up I-84..No big deal.
Not everyone who flies in and out of the NY Metro airports goes to NYC or Long Island.
As a matter of fact, from my former home town in Bergen County it is easier to get to Stewart than to Newark Liberty. And takes the same amount of time. About an hour.

I'm not sure what there is to explain. You are the one that made the Stewart/Manhattan connection in your last message. An hour trip might be fine for some people, but why not do it in 20 minutes or less?

I was referring to those normal people who cannot afford to just jump on a helicopter.

Hey, have any of you folks heard of Islip- MacArthur: KISP, out here on Long Island? Only Southwest seems to know it exists. It's large, easy to get to and ready for all the major players to come back since the new addition to the terminal was built. Just taking away all the Long Island flyers from the "big 3" nyc area aerodromes would ease congestion.

If the regional jets are put at Floyd Bennett then ideally there would be a taxiway (world's longest?) to JFK with the monorail extended alongside - too many passengers would need the connection to other flights and this would give the airlines some flexibility as well. But probably insanely expensive but the big hurdle is finding the acres (equal or greater) to restore to the area to satisfy the environmental concerns. Probably doable but not without difficulty. Alternately cargo flights could be sent to Floyd Bennett - and off loaded to barges/tugs via short sea shipping to elsewhere in Brooklyn, Long Island, Bronx or NJ (wherever). Well, its an idea - you have to think out of the box to make it work.

This is slightly off topic, but having been to JFK for first time last month (LGA flight cancelled due to weather...), I was shocked at how shoddy, small and dirty JFK airport is. It needs to be razed and rebuilt from scratch. What an embarrassment as the first part of the US that many foreigners see. It looks positively "third world", and the local infrastructure is a mess, too. I just went through SFO a few days ago, and while not great, it seemed futuristic in comparison.

Pardon my asking, but which "airport" at JFK did you fly into...each airline generally has it's own terminal, none of which I would catagorize as shoddy.

I am guessing someone just went through Terminal 2 or Terminal 3.
