Before the COVID emergency airBaltic was flying an A220-300 Riga-Abu Dhabi Route nonstop 4,350km. Riga-Urumqi is not much further: 4,550km. Both well within the plane’s range capability: 6,204km (Wikipedia says).

The Air Baltic to Riga delivery flight is typically 8 hours.

If Airbus can increase cruise speed 30-40 knots, on par with the 737 Max and keep the economy it becomes a stronger candidate for longer routed including transatlantic routes

Chris B, are you sure of a difference of 30 to 40 knots? For the B737MAX I found 453kn, for the A220 447kn.

Delivery flights are empty, but this flight was loaded with emergency supplies, this has to be taken in account.
