This used to happen a lot when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. Orbital Sciences is in a big slump. This is two in a row. A lot of people's jobs on the Eastern Shore are at stake if they don't get their s##t together.

I wonder if it is a product of the older generation, the once that had to deal will all the issues during the first development of rockets, retiring and being replaced by a new, younger generation of engineers. The retiring generation built strong and rugged whereas the younger generation seems to like more fragile and complicated.

Yikes - I used to work at Orbital (Chandler, Arizona). Back then, however, they designed, manufactured and launched only low orbit rockets. Referencing your comment about the younger generation, let me tell you, even back in the 90s Orbital experienced its anomalies resulting in mission failures.

My understanding is that Orbital used refurbished Russian engines that dated back 40 some years. Gootta cut costs ya know....keep the stockholders happy. Stockholders ain't gonna be too happy with the results of this one.

That wasn't the shock-wave that caused him to bank.

I think you are referring to this ridiculous YouTube video??:

This dude, "DahBoo7" is a total CT crazy case. I did comment on this video, mentioning (A) that airplanes "bank", they don't "tilt" and that the obvious left bank when the explosion was seen was merely a reaction by the pilot.

This YouTube(r) (apparently) thinks that an atmospheric air burst travels as fast as the speed of light. Such a sad understanding of basic science. But wait....there's more (as can be seen in this nonsense video.

Unfortunately, in this "age of the Internet" (going on 20 years or so now....not even old enough to drink in some jurisdictions) the level of 'CT' baloney ('CT' = Conspiracy Theory) continues to expand. Much like our over-all Universe? I dunno....but to quote from a motion picture that is ALSO from about 20 years ago? "Stupid is as stupid does"......

I live about 100 miles due west of the launch site (and frequently attend launches, but not yesterday). It never got high enough to be visible from here, but we did hear the blast. We didn't know it was from Wallops at the time, with Quantico, the FBI Academy, Dahlgren, Patuxent River and A.P. Hill, all around us, something is always going boom.

Orbital's contract for 8 flights was for $1.8B. This was the first flight with a larger second stage, so it would've been worth a little more than the average. All public record. Look it up.

I know it's not a billion ( mike was being sarcastic) but there's more than the loss of revenue. Watch what hits the financial statement. We also don't know all the terms of the contract. Bet it isn't just an " oh well, that's ok" deal. IMHO.

Supply rocket headed to space station explodes

ATLANTIC, Va. (AP) -- An unmanned commercial supply rocket bound for the International Space Station exploded moments after liftoff Tuesday evening, with debris falling in flames over the launch site in Virginia. No injuries were reported following the first catastrophic launch in NASA's commercial spaceflight effort.
The accident was sure to draw criticism over the space agency's growing reliance on private U.S. companies in this post-shuttle era. NASA is paying billions of dollars to Orbital Sciences and the SpaceX company to make station deliveries, and it's counting on SpaceX and Boeing to start flying U.S. astronauts to the orbiting lab as early as 2017. This was the fourth fligh...
