I know the chance of "me" ever being involved in something like this is statistically pretty low, but, whenever I travel, I always do so with medical equipment that would cause great hardship to leave behind. It's a small carry on bag, but, you have to leave all of that behind during an evacuation. I wonder how long you would have to wait to get it back, assuming it was something like this, and not Asiana 214 where a large portion of the overhead bins were destroyed?

I'm not sure what condition you have, but I can promise you that voicing your concern to EMT's or fire personnel would ensure a rapid response. They are some of the most morbid people I know, but curiously, also the most compassionate and caring.

Very unlikely that you'll ever need to evacuate a plane.

But consider a possible solution to be a small backpack with just your passport and medical equipment that you would wear backwards (in front of you like a small belly).

You wouldn't want to have anything in your hands that would hinder your ability to exit safely or that could be dropped and hinder others exit.

Do not use a backpack on your back. Backpacks can swing wildly behind you as you turn in place, which in a crowded environment (eg plane during evacuation) will strike and can injure others.

As always, remember, nearly all medical equipment (almost certainly including whatever equipment that concerns you) can be easily replaced, and is not worth risking yours and others' safety.

There's a reason US was un-loading them as far back as 2009...

Midwest to get 10 US Airways Embraer 190's

Republic Airways, in an effort to retire the Boeing 717’s currently operated by their newly acquired Midwest Airlines, will purchase 10 Embraer 190’s from US Airways as that airline tries to unload about 25 of the 99-seat regional jets.

The acquisition of these 10 jets will give Republic Airways a total of 145 Embraer Regional Jets. These new jets will allow Midwest to be completely operated by regional jets and eliminates any mainline aircraft being a part of the Midwest airline.

Ermmm....the articles reads: "The cabin crew had notified the captain that there was a smell of smoke in the cabin, though no smoke was visible."

Nothing about smoke in the cockpit, contrary to the title above.

So, diverting out of "abundance of caution" is logical. However, with NO visible sign of fire, then one has to wonder 'why' evacuate using the slides, and risk injuries?

Update: I see the title is changed to reflect the text in the story.

a few weeks ago there were several diversions for smile and other mx issues in a 2 day period:

smoke in the cockpit

Smoke in the cockpit was reported by JetBlu 827, an Embraer ERJ-190 moments ago. The plane made an emergency landing and evacuations were underway at the time of this post. FD on location requesting a "full box response" as hot spots are being reported in the cargo are.
