AEA, AIA Respond To President Obama's Attack On General Aviation

Размещено

The President repeatedly made damaging remarks aimed at corporate airplane owners and operators, and he urged Congress to eliminate or reduce tax depreciation schedules for general aviation airplanes, something he agreed to last year as part of the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010. It's interesting that he complains about corporate execs flying around in private jets which occassionally does involve personal use, but mostly increases business opportunities. At the same time, Mr. Obama flies around in a Boeing 747 at a cost of 181K per hour just for the cost of the plane. How much of his flying in the next 18 months will be for his "personal" use for campaigning. Speaking of talking out of both sides of your mouth at once!!!! Oh, didnt Michelle and the kids, along with a couple of neieces or nephews just fly to South Africa for some sightseeing??? I bet they didnt go on Continental

@Eric: They probably went on Executive One Foxtrot, which usually is a C-32A which is a B752. I do agree though, that they shouldn't be getting a Boeing 747-8i, as a 777/787 would do perfectly fine. But I do think Obama should use Executive One as much as possible, to save a sh*tload of money, as their country is almost bankrupt.

Go ahead and keep pretending folks. The U.S. through many administrations has outspent its pocket book. 4 Trillion in wars alone the past decade. If you want to play you have to pay. BTW the President has to pay for his transportation to a political event the same way Bush had to. Reality bites...

What the hell is wrong with you people? Since when does the President fly commercially? And if he did, what about his security detail, the media that accompanies him, his assistants and staff, etc. Did you complain when Bush flew in AF-One?

The issue is whether Exxon-Mobil can use super depreciation to avoid paying any taxes, whether every dime spent on the plane should be a legitimate deduction. When someone says "General Aviation", I think of my Cherokee Six, my friend's F-33 Bonanza, my old client's Cessna 421C Golden Eagle. I don't consider a multimillion dollar corporate jet as being GA. Maybe it's time to split AOPA into two parts, one for real general aviation and the other for plain a costing more than $2,000,000.

Sorry, this new tablet keeps trying to correct my spelling...

The above should have read: Maybe it's time to split AOPA into two parts, one for real general aviation and the other for planes costing more than $2,000,000. So all of you with Citations or 737s, won't have to rub elbows with us riffraff.

To C. Ewsley Grady, there is nothing 'wrong' with us people. Regardless of what 'you consider' a GA type aircraft, it's the FAA which does the classification. Maybe you should concentrate on what could be coming which are 'user fees' which you darling little Cherokee Six qualifies for. And shouldn't this so called leader be concentrating more on creating jobs than entertaining his ego as the Pres who went after big money. And Grady, where does all the jobs come from - you? This country has a big problem - people are not earning an income - no one is spending for fear of losing their jobs which by the way are paying only depressed wages - homes are now worth less than the mortgage - states budgets are depressed, workers who have jobs are having to do more for less pay, we have a congress butting heads and a country almost at default of it's depth. I could go on and on...but the point is who gives a hoot about some corporate jet.....the country has bigger problems to solve....squeezing a the rich isn't going to balance our budget.....the trillions are way more.
This country has way more bigger fish to fry and it starts with congress - both parties. If you truly want to make a difference....stop complaining here and write you congressman

Come on, Rudy, people have been fixated on user fees every time there is a Democrat in the White House. I heard it over and over during the Clinton years and now during Obama's Presidency. The real fact is that the wealthy and the corporations aren't content to have the lowest tax rates in the past 50 years, they have to push for every loophole they can squeeze out of the Republicans. And while they want the President to "fix" the economy, it has to be done on the backs of those least able to afford it.

Why are Ryan and his supporters pushing to end Social Security and Medicare? They aren't even part of the budget, and they aren't the problem.

The day before he said this about GA aircraft he was addressing workers (Probably union workers) at an aluminum plant...telling them how important their contributions are to the aircraft industry.
Whoever said "How did this post become so political" should be up on his current events.
Obama is all about political. That is SO obvious.
His wreckless comments about the aircraft industry is just a small sample of how destructive his presidency has been to our great nation.
upchucked
C. WESLEY GRADY 0
Well, that is your view of his presidency, to which you are certainly entitled. Given the negative comments that have been made about him and his agenda, which started the very day he was sworn into office, it has been incredibly difficult to accomplish anything. I fear that we have now gotten to the point where there will never again be any consensus reached between the parties. The current congress has already been identified as being the most do nothing congress of all time, and it is only going to get worse.

AS RONALD REAGAN PROUDLY DISPLAYED A SIGN ON HIS OVAL OFFICE DESK READING" GET IT DONE!" HE DIDN'T BLAME EVERYONE ELSE THAT HE COULD NOT GET ANYTHING DONE. HE SIMPLY GOT IT DONE.
HE ALSO SAID "GOVERNMENT WAS NOT THE SOLUTION; GOVERNMENT WAS THE PROBLEM."

PRESENT ADMINISTRATION COULD LEARN FROM REAGAN'S EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP, INSTEAD OF ELECTING TO FLY AROUND MORE THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY PLAYING GOLF OR POLITICKING, ALL AT OUR ENORMOUS EXPENSE. AND THAT FLYBY OVER NEW YORK CITY, REMEMBER? HOW MUCH DID THAT COST YOU AND ME?

I SUGGEST WE ALL STICK TO THE TOPIC HERE. GENERAL AVIATION, CESSNA 150 OR CESSNA CITATION....THE AVIATION RELATED AND SUPPORTED BUSINESSES CREATE AND MAINTAIN JOBS AND A ROBUST ECONOMY. IF NOT FOR THE "WEALTHY OR SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES THAT OPERATE AIRCRAFT, OUR ECONOMY WOULD BE IN WORST SHAPE. LET FREE ENTERPRISE HEAL AMERICA RATHER THAN GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS.

You keep saying to stop posting about politics and stick to the subject, and then can't help yourself, you have to post some blatant attack on the President. Did he visit more countries than any other president? Of course he did, many of his overseas trips have centered on international meetings, such as the G-20 economic summit in England or a NATO summit in France that focused on the kind of international partnerships that Obama stressed as a candidate. Others have included Obama's attempts to rebuild international support for the U.S., such as his speech to the Muslim world from Egypt, and a town hall meeting with college students in Turkey. Got that? REBUILD support, that the last President took to it's lowest level in history.

And you may think that individuals or companies buying $22 Million Citations or $24 Gulfstreams should get special tax breaks that aren't available to anyone else, I don't. That is the problem with the tax code today, it is set up to favor the wealthy over those who live from paycheck to paycheck.

What I don't understand is how any president can diss one of the most productive manufacturing industries left in the United States and then say he's for creating jobs. Sorry mister president, but every time you open your mouth about corporate jets, my industry takes a hit and a few more people get closer to unemployment. Learn from what your friend Oprah said, "it's good to have a jet" and learn who creates jobs.

@ C Wesley Grady- Social Security and Medicaid aren't part of the problem? huh? ?? When SS was started there were like 50 people paying in for every one taking out. Now it's like 2 to 1, and will go even more in the opposite direction as more and more boomers retire. Not part of the problem, simpy because it's "off budget"? So it'll be ok if they send you a T'Bill instead of a check next month (and the next, and the next, and the next etc.) right? C'mon, you're way smarter than that.

C. WESLEY GRADY 0
Brian, may I strongly suggest you read the trustee's reports on SS and Medicare. You can read the one on SS in .pdf at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/OACT/TR/2011/tr2011.pdf It is 244 pages long, but is easy reading.

The first statement as to condition: The projected point at which the combined Trust Funds will be exhausted comes in 2036— one year earlier than the estimate in last year's report. That one year adjustment was because of extensions of live expectancy of Americans. That is 25 years from now and presumes that nothing is done between now and then to increase revenues. You will recall that under provisions of the Affordable Care Act, in 2013 SS premiums are collected on more income than is currently subject to the tax, ultimately ending up at $200,000 per individual or $250,000 per couple in 2017. There is a current balance in the SS funds of 2.6 Trillion dollars.

Medicare premiums, in regard to SMI, as I am sure you are aware, are adjusted annually based upon the prior year's expense to income ratio. Accordingly, it is never facing a deficit. You can read the trustee's report at http://www.cms.gov/ReportsTrustFunds/downloads/tr2011.pdf, it is 273 pages, but again it is really easy reading. At the present time, there is approximately $350 Billion dollars held in the combined HI & SMI trust funds that make up Medicare. The HI premiums, of course, require an enabling resolution in Congress to be increased, which occurs at regular intervals.

I will repeat myself, Social Security and Medicare are not part of the budgetary process and are not an important consideration in terms of the current national debt or annual budgetary deficit. You can read the trustee's reports and the projections for the next 25, 50 and 75 years.

DeKevin Thornton 0
@C Wesley, but as the trustee's report is sure to explain SS is currently paying out more then it brings in. The problem with SS is that it start as and has always been an entitlement program. The first recipients never paid a dime into the program. It's always been the biggest ponze scheme ever created. The only fix is to eliminate it! All indications are that is exactly what will happen. They will keep raising the retirement age higher and higher before you can get full benefits. Soon, the retirement age will be near 70, so much for those folks thinking about retiring at 55, no benefits for them (or at least only minimum benefits after 62).

The best answer to allow individuals to invest their SS tax into a private fund that is approved by the government starting the minute they start working. Then all the money is theirs to invest and pass along to others in their family after they pass. Individuals can better take care of themselves if required to, than the government, but only if required too.
upchucked
C. WESLEY GRADY 0
Why don't you read the report, instead of guessing what it says. And, fyi, since there will be higher contribution following 2013, there will be no need to raise the benefit age. But, if you read the report, you would know that.
dmthornt
DeKevin Thornton 0
OK< So I did, the Disability Insurance is projected to ruin out in 2018, and SS in 2038, that's based on several assumptions and projections. One is that income will out pace inflation by 1.2% over that time period and the number of kids that families have is 2 and it assumes they will be productive workers and not SS recipients. Also, SS tax go up by some 4 percentage points over several years and unemployment rate is 5.5%. Current age of retirement with full benefits is 67 and the presidents debt commission recommended raising it to 69 or 70, I don't remember because it's would not impact me, yet. Also, with current projections, after 2038, SS benefits would b paid at a rate of 77% of full benefits. All in all, the report while easy to read is very depressing and I believe is dependent upon some very optimistic projections, given today economic climate.

So, I stand by my earlier comments, the best thing we can do is let people take care of themselves.
upchucked
C. WESLEY GRADY 0
Don't forget, the ACA specifies that in 2013 the ceiling on SS payments is raised and that by 2017, it will be $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. There are a significant number of people who make more than $106,000, the current ceiling. By including all the income, the SS trust fund will remain solvent well beyond 2036.

The aviation industry is responsible for most the pollution - emissions that have been and continued to be responsible for this nation's grid - space.

Yet-today-they are protected via the ATA and other organizations up on the Hill with their lobbyists to boot!

When the families here on the ground are considered 2nd class citizens when compared to the airlines and their rights - then there is something wrong here in America. When five states and their Atty Generals go to bat against the most recent D.C. Court of appeals involving the ASR in that region - then we fully understand that the airlines count - where people don't.

If flyer's have rights - then what about the families that are captured within the glide paths and take off plates?

If the Feds want your tail number - give it to them.
Have you forgotten 9/11 already ?

Don't worry about us land lovers - we will survive!
dmthornt
DeKevin Thornton 0
@ C. Wesley, I hope you're old enough to use what you need before then, cause I'm not betting my retirement on it and my retirement isn't all that far away. For the younger folks, I hope they chose not to bet that it'll be solvent when they retire.

Because the fallacy is even removing the ceiling won't affect SS solvency very much, remember only about 10% of the work force make over $100,000 per year, so you only get about $80 billion more a year. The only way is to continue to raise the retirement age till you get back to around 5 work for every one on retirement.

Wesley, regardless of what the balance sheets of the "trust funds" say - THERE IS NO MONEY THERE!! All of the long term assets of the so-called trust funds are in govenment Treasury Bonds which have to someday, one day be paid back out of general revenue, adding trillions to the "on budget" deficits. We DO NOT and WILL NOT have the CASH to pay those obligations (unless we continue printing money leading to hyper-inflation). So don't lecture me about the financial state of what truly is the worlds largest Ponzi Scheme.
