I fly to and inside China rather often. As a retired pilot, I carefully note the condition of the craft and the actions of the crew. Generally, both seem to be on par with what I see in the States, particularly with the regional air carriers operating under a legacy name, i.e. "commuter or regional airlines". However, the very rapid growth of the Chinese middle class and affordable airfares, among other things have dramatically increased the number of carriers and the frequency of flights. The airspace is very crowded, ATC seems chaotic and experience lacking, so I would have expected more serious incidents than reported to date. Time will tell.

The reason of "crowded" airspace is simply because Chinese airspace is controlled by the military, not mostly open above certain attitude like in US. airliners are limited to very narrow airways and that means... traffic jam in the air... That is why China needed the high speed railway system. Having 17billiton people crowded in a area similar to east cost of US/ Germany isn't easy, and parts of China is turning into parts of Japan...

I was disappointed with the paywall to access this article, too. Perhaps FlightAware could review their best practices for posting articles.
