Amen, Preacher. It's just not the same here at FA without you.

I recall his story of meeting one at Kadena when it lost an engine. Never see an SR-71 story without remembering that. RIP Preacher.

While reading this, I kept thinking of the only SR-71 I've been close to, and it turns out it's the same one :), at the SAC Museum - Between Lincoln and Omaha,NE
Love the line, after I drop 3 parachutes on the runway we'll stop ... I don’t have time now to talk. After the tower repeatedly asked what type AC he was. CLASSIC !

It kinda surprised me that we hadn't given it a better code for our NATO partners, such as calling it a C-40D, a variant not used in the C-40 line but that our partners could be informed is in fact not a military 737 variant. Or C-39 which was never used, although the Soviets may have had a better chance to crack that one.

You presume that the Soviets didn't already know everything about the aircraft, which they probably did by that time, including any NATO name for it. If it was shared with NATO then, the Soviets had it within days, if not hours.

Minutes, if Hillary had been involved back then.

Nothing really stays secret very long. They have their spy's we have ours. With the Blackbird Lockheed kept it under wraps for quite some time right up until they flew to Edwards for flight acceptance tests. They same is going on right now with another plane from the skunk works. People are saying they have seen a strange looking plane flying around at night. Sometime soon the Air Force will own up to what it is.

Actually, I think a beer commercial will come out starring it first then the Air Force will have to own up.

I was stationed at Beale AFB from June 66 to May 68. I did not work on the SR 71 but I did work on the supporting Tankers and the B52's stationed at Beale. Our Hangars were right across from each other. Funny thing about the SR just about anywhere on base you knew one was going on a mission as the start cart could be heard all over the base. When the Black beard hit the afterburners on take off the ground shook as if an earthquake was taking place.
