I wonder if SAN's lone runway can even handle the 77W and a full payload for the JFK flight?
AndrewA380
AndrewA380 1
It probably can. A 744 can't. It technically can, but just a precaution if it's engine(s) go out, it's a huge risk if the 744 can make it over "the hill" of houses on the west side of the airport. I learned it from a private San Diego airport tour.

Well there must be some kind of gate for a triple 7,
Again,... British Airways is there daily

true but the BA bird is a 772, much shorter in wingspan and length.

What do you mean "NON story?" Sorry for my misunderstanding :(

Seem to remember UAL running a 747 into SAN back in the day. Displaced threshold allowing about 7500ft shouldnt be a big deal. Current competitive environment will surely keep AA from filling that 777. Almost 10K avail for dept. LGA in the 70s,80s routinely had L1011s/DC10s on those two 7000ft runways!
preacher1
preacher1 1
Did they cut them back or what? You talk about those 2 7000' runways but then said almost 10k availablefor departure?

The two 7000' rwys are at LGA where back in the 80s,90s L1011/DC10 operations were common. At SAN, rwy27 threshold is displaced meaning out of an approx 10000ft(9400ft to be exact) 7600ft is avail for arvls.

Wow! Is this for some kind of special occasion or is AA just feeling generous? Either way, I can just imagine how epic the GE engines will sound departing KSAN!!

Daily - a British airways triple 7 to LHR ....
AndrewA380

You will probably never see an 777-300ER at SAN again. Yes, the 777-200ER is a regular visitor. The -300ER is extremely rare at San Diego. Ask the local spotters.

It would be more impressive if it was coming into LGA ;)

I dont believe SAN has ever seen a B777-300 before.
ace005
ace005 1
Also, SAN rarely sees any other 777 bus a BAW daily flight to LHR. The JAL 777 is about to go.
preacher1
preacher1 1
Don't know about the 300 but ain't a 777 of some kind already been in there?
Av8nut
Michael Fuquay 1
Not sure if they have gates to accommodate a 777. Also part of the runways are on piers - not sure if they could take the extra load.
ace005
ace005 1
At SAN there are 777-200 gates, but due to the 77W's size it will probably be parked near the Landmark Aviation Hangar.
preacher1
preacher1 1
Well, I wonder. It's about 33' longer than than the 200 but everything else is about the same, give or take a foot or 2. I haven't heard about any gate modifications anywhere else. Now if that 33' sticks out in the movement area, there might be a problem.lol

preacher1 1
Personally, not that much difference in 67/77. what about the schedule John gives above or is that just wishful thinking?
Av8nut
Michael Fuquay 1
I was thinking Delta(?) used a 767 at some point in the past. Don't think that's happening anymore though. Never heard of a 777 (talk about hot brakes)- That would be something to see.

preacher1 4
So what is the big deal, other than new service and a nice plane?
ace005
ace005 1
Obviously not a new service, this is a ONE TIME deal for SAN. The 77W will most likely never be scheduled flying to SAN.
AndrewA380

It's very rare for San Diego to get the Boeing 777-300ER. It's awesome since it is operated by AA. August 4th will be the ONLY day the 777-300ER will arrive and depart San Diego. Trust me, it's a big deal. Thanks for commenting on my first squawk! :)

One thing about it, the 777 any version is a nice plane. I neverhave flown one. I havae plent of time in a 57 and some 67. Friens tell me it's not that much different on the pointey end; a few more buttons/bells&whistles and a little slower response than a 67.
Post was good. Stay on top of the story. There'll probably be more on it closer to August.
Been into KSAN in a 757 and 707 before. They tell me it hasn't changed any over the years. It's bad tight.

Sitting in buildings beside the approach pattern, watching incoming aircraft- at eye level, or close to it. Arriving in a window seat, you feel like you should wave to them. Per age, am just older than Preacher....
