Apologies for ignorance, but are the current MAX versions of the 737 fly by wire? I know 777 and 787 are. Any help appreciated

The 737 MAX is not fly by wire.

OK Thanks. Kind of interesting. B777 is 20+ years in service and is FBW. I would have thought that Boeing would have upgraded to FBW on the 737 series because of the volume of aircraft and potential fuel savings ( reduced weight?). I understand that it is a significant investment but with many potential benefits.

I totally disagree with " this is the newest most technology advanced" airplane out there. It is not. The 787 Series is the newest most advanced. The 737 Max is a "re-engined" (Leap) and new winglets airplane and a few interior upgrades with lighting etc.. Yes it was very "newly built" absolutely, but besides from a the new engines and some minor cockpit upgrades like glass etc, this is very old design. Boeing gave up on resigning this in order to speed up orders and get them flying. A 737 is a 737 and is a very reliable plane.

Ok so what are they going to inspect for? Chipped paint? Loose toilet seats? Crap like this makes one wonder why they are allowed to fly anything.
They need a reason otherwise its a waste of time before the boxes are recovered and data recovered from them. Oh well another third rate airline.

To check for proper maintenance of the aircraft to make sure its airworthy in compliance with the local Maintenance regulations as well as Boeing's recommended Safety and Maintenance Procedures. It's not a waste of time; if there is a fatal flaw in any of the 737's in Lion's Fleet they need to find and fix it.
