Bootstrapped, Profitable, & Proud: FlightAware

Submitted

FlightAware did over a million dollars in the first 18 months after it launched, according to Baker. “It’s pretty remarkable considering we had no business strategy or real products back then,” he says. “Now, sales are in the millions, we continue to grow revenue 40-75% a year, we’ve got over 20 employees and offices in two cities (Houston, New York) and three data centers (Houston, New York, London). We think it’s a rate we can sustain for several years before we need to expand the strategy.” (37signals.com) More...

that's awesome! The cool thing is, it feels like my little aviation community still. I go on to the boards and shoot the @#$ with fellow pilots and foamers and look at my local airport's traffic etc.
Good Job FA!

I gotta agree, if the passion ain't there, it turns into drudgery. If you look at the businesses that went from advocation, to vocation, you will find probably the happiest and most successful operations. Also I might add, longevity.

as a volunteer for an area initiative that hopes to advocate for a local, and underutilized airport (KYNG), i plan on mentioning the merits of flightaware at our next meeting, which is march 5.

Great story. Now please expand globally. I would like to have the same great detail information for flights in the US for flights in other countries. Of course free thanks to the ads. If the FAA provide the feed, I guess others can be persuaded.
