Remember that this is the airline that bought its own refinery to try to insulate themselves from jet fuel price fluctuations.

1st Question: Where does that money go? 2nd Question: For what is that money used to cancel out a "carbon footprint?"

In the long run it goes to pay for greener infrastructure like windmills, solar, etc. It may also subsidize someone buying more expensive, greener power, thus shifting people from dirtier power and into cleaner power. As, a short example, I can use myself. I buy the filthiest, cheapest electricity I can (I really do!). Suppose my carbon footprint is 10 units per year. I could but greener electricity, but it's too expensive. But wait, Delta has just handed me $500 to use to switch to greener electricity for 12 months. That is the price difference between my cheaper filthy electricity and greener electricity. The result is that my carbon footprint has gone from 10 units to 3 units. The tricky aspect is that, if anyone is bothering to keep track of such things, it's Delta that's crediting with a 7 unit reduction in carbon, not me.

Even though it’s up a little from where I got out, I’m glad I’m not exposed to DAL throwing money at make believe problems.

The only solution to carbon neutral is not flying.

Right, the only solution to reduce carbon emission is not breathing then...

more wind-dip and air pudding from the marketing department's PC gestapo. What a total sellout and bunch of nonsense. The promise of any engineer worth his salt is to build machines that are more efficient, and are a general benefit to the citizens of the world. If you need a big splash to show that you care about such things, it's much ado about nothing really. Now if they do it just right, they'll dump the Billion down the green rabbithole with virtually nothing tangible to show for it. Can't wait for the ticket price increase(s) to pay for all this alchemy.

And the game of walnut shells continues wonder under which shell they are going to pull this off if EVER.

Bravo for Delta commiting to this challenge, considering they have one of the oldest fleets (many many MD-88s) among the three legacy airlines...

- Delta has made a minor, involuntary, step to reduce carbon by 1) cancelling all China flights, 2) interrupting a tiny bit of business activity, for the smoke-filled industrial zones in China. Most of the credit goes not to Delta, but to the Wuhan virus .

Delta: Greta, here's your 1 billion dollar seat!
Greta: But it's not even first class.
