I'll bet UAL appreciates the heck out their plane's picture being used in this story.

Hey, give the media a break -- at least its a picture of an airplane and not a drone. LOL

In addition, that picture looks like it's of SFO's RWY 28 L/R, while the story takes place in Turkey.

It looks like the bird will not have the guts to do that again.

And how would YOU feel with a 738 stuck in your craw?

In other news, PETA held a memorial service today and is pursuing legal action against Turkish Airlines. ;)

Total irony if it was a turkey that hit it.

I thought Pterodactyl's were extinct!

From the yellow feathers and the new help wanted sign at Sesame Street, I don't think it was a Pterodactyl.

Think they'd print a story about me gettin outa my front seat and goin to the back to take a leak, cause that's way more rare than bird strikes! Slow news day!

While the article downplays the danger of a radome strike, it can be very serious. Airspeed sensors in the nose area are destroyed or the airflow is disrupted. Either can cause errorous airspeed indications and total loss of airspeed indications.

Nastiest bird strike that I can remember......that didn't cause a crash or water landing :-) ..... was an AA B767 departing CDG in the early 2000's. Multiple bird strikes at 320+KIAS on climb out, multiple bird penetrations sustained including bird remains entering the cockpit slightly below captain's windscreen and to the outboard side. Safe return to CDG.

How'd you get all that at 320? Not doubting, just asking?

I read it wrong never mind. I thought you said FL320. I didn't have my eyes open good. LOL

At what altitude would there be multiple birds, where planes are flying at 320 KIAS?

I had to look up that info, it was at 12,000' and it causes a depressurization.

Bar headed goose flying over the Himalayas have been recorded up to FL230. Don't know how many others go to near that level.

Ruppells Griffon Vulture is highest recorded bird at FL360. One was sucked into a jet engine in the mid 70's.

There are several species of hawks, eagles, vulture over Turkey. Speaking of turkeys, the are a North American species and don't fly very high - a number of bash incidents involving cars & trucks occur locally. I braked one day to miss one at windshield level.

Yes they can fly short distances and at a pretty good clip. We have wild turkeys on our ranch and on several occasions thru the years they have chased me while on the tractor. Guess they don't like tractors. Trust me it's scary having a 10-15 lb bird dive bombing you.

We have what are called turkey vultures here in AR. We see them after road kill here and you slow down as you approach a group on the highway as they have to run a step or 2 before they can fly. Our regular turkeys are ground bound and are hunted twice per year.

Well, normal rotation is 140-16LIAS, depending on other factors such as weight and temp, or pilot preference. At 320KIAS on a climbout, he wouldn't necessarily be all that high.
