It'll take him forever to get through TSA airport security with that big suit.

Technically Space begins @ 6o miles up or 100km. However what this Skydiver is about to do is very courageous and great.

All you folks can have them parachutes. I had to make 3 jumps in USAF to get my crew wings and I never understood the logic of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Just sayin'

and if all else fails ride that baby down...lol

"There's no such thing as a perfectly good airplane" =D

Maybe not, but if it will fly and land, ain't no reason to jump out of it.LOL

I guess we all define things differently. To me, if it's flying and controllable it is pretty good but if it is flying exactly as it was intended to fly then it is a perfectly good airplane. If I didn't think that way, I probably wouldn't even get on one.

Other than breaking a record, at that height, what is 18000ft? 2nd question; he seems to have taken all the precautions such as the prebreathing and all, but what sort of stresses can the suit and/or his body take if he does crack the sound barrier, speed wise?

Rod Collen 1
Actually he is jumping from 120,000 feet. Their main website has a ton of interesting info: http://www.redbullstratos.com/

I meant he was only 18000 above the record. I can't see any gain other than him breaking a record. I can't believe any new data can be gained on 18000 ft.

Rodster001
Rod Collen 2
When Joe Kittinger made his jump in 1960 he did not break the sound barrier. Felix is expected to:

"As Felix flashes through the complete lack of air density, he could reach the speed of sound at approximately 100,000 ft, that is if his jump begins at 120,000 ft. At that altitude, due to the temperature difference from sea level, Mach 1 would be approximately 690 mph. If he continues and passes through the speed of sound he'll be supersonic."

It will be the first time anyone has done anything like that, but also they are developing new tech for space suits that will provide passengers/crew with emergency exits from space (among other things).

I assume he wants to make sure he gets the record broken first of all. I don't know if there is some real science that they expect to learn something from or not or if it is just a stunt more or less. I wonder if he will yell "Geronimo"!!!!!

SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS
Red Bull Stratos aims to provide information that will further the progression of aerospace safety. The key benefits for the science community could include:

o To aid development of a new generation of space suits - including enhanced mobility and visual clarity - and other systems to lead toward passenger/crew exit from space.

o To aid development of protocols for exposure to high altitude/high acceleration.

o To aid exploration of the effects on the human body of supersonic acceleration and deceleration, including development of the latest innovations in parachute systems.

Thanks for the info. Hope it all goes as planned. Like any flight, in the end it's all about the landing!

AAviator,
Like you, I take calculated risks every time I get behind the controls of an airplane. But unlike you, I have a sense of humor! It sounds like you need to climb up to FL 120 and chill out a little :-)
AAaviator
AAaviator -7
You foolish amateur! There is no flight level 120 in the United States. If you take calculated risks (as you claim) based on that level of ignorance, it's no wonder you make asinine assessments about anyone else's aeronautical endeavors. And you don't think I have a sense of humor? Well, you should see me howling at your silly dumb ass right now! Why don't you go back and hide under your bed little girl while REAL MEN like Felix Baumgartner (who you prefer to label "idiot")goes about his business of setting records and achieving things that you couldn't even conceive in a dream.

I think that 120,000 ft would be FL1200 (not FL120)...

I read about this about a year ago. The jump got all tangled up after Baumgartner finished planning all the stuff for the jump and one of the sponsors named someone else to do the jump. I'm glad to hear that he's finally able to make the jump.

Gotta say, just the idea of going up that high in a capsule is enough to get me queasy, with everything that might go wrong (eg, a slow leak, let alone catastrophic blowout of the hatch or something)... but the idea of popping the hatch and STEPPING OUT into a 120,000' freefall?!?

"Little things" like going into a 20rpm+ corkscrew on the way down, that you could turn into a human centrifuge and lose consciousness, all have to be considered, and will always be a real danger.

Baumgartner's got balls the size of grapefruits, as far as I'm concerned. Kudos to him, and the very best of luck.

In 1960 when Joe K. did his jump, did he not hit the speed of sound?

This jump would be a record, but 120,000 feet isn't even half way to what is officially defined as space.

I don't think Joe Kittinger broke the sound barrier. Felix Baumgartner is going for several records, highest altitude freefall and breaking the sound barrier are two of them. I believe Red Bull is the main sponsor. They have supported the team in the design of the capsule, suit, breathing appartus and the large amount of science that is going into the endeavor. I guess the naysayers must also relegate Chuck Yeager and Colonel Stapp to the category of idiots.....NOT!

OKayyy AAviator...
Obviously the FL 120 thing was just an effort to be humorous. But you didn't get it! As I stated earlier, you obviously don't have a sense of humor. Anyway, you really do need to chill out dude..and keep the blue side up! Tailwinds.
AAaviator
AAaviator -7
"Obviously" my ass! Obviously you're a liar. Your boneheaded reference to FL120 had nothing to do with an effort to be humorous and everything to do with being an ignorant punk, and then doing a lame job of backpeddling around your gaff. You think I was born yesterday you weasel? Speaking of "yesterday", what's the deal with your "chill" fetish, and your repeated use of that last century expression? What decade are you living in anyway? Freak

It's funny how today's snarky cynics won't hesitate to take advantage of the technology that yesterday's so called "idiots" produced. I assume all of you sarcastic naysayers WALK everywhere you go since flying or driving were both conceived and developed by your definition of "idiots" in their time. If this 120K foot jump by the "idiot" who you mock like a giddy schoolgirl leads to the development of a life saving launch abort escape system for tomorrows astronauts, then suddenly the concept would be perceived as bold and daring, the genius of a visionary. Face it, all of you snarky, sarcastic naysayers are little more than spineless cowards, scared of your own shadow, all the while diminishing others who DO what you're too much of a wuss to do, then smugly call them "idiots". The real idiot is the sorry ass amoeba-man (like some of you) who merely exist for an entire lifetime at a zero-risk level.

I guess the only reason Cirrus stays in the news is on account of that dang chute.LOL. I guess that makes them similar. Heck with all this. It's gettin' about sweet tea time. Too hot to fish.LOL

Duh!! I forgot all about the freakin chute. I'm headed to the garden. Will need tea soon!

Oh yea. Sprayed the Japanese beetles and worked the hoe a few minutes. Got on the dozer for a bit to straighten up some rain gullys. Tea time, then on to the steaks. Weekends rock!!! Pretty soon every day will be Saturday. Lol
