It seems unlikely that a British United plane flying a Union Jack would have a German registration.

I'm taking a guess here.. I think it may have to do with the Berlin blockade and the creation of the three air corridors that may have only been accessible to the western allies. For this business unit (route) to operate, it had to do so under license, so-to-speak, of either GB, FR, or the USA, in this case GB.
Pure speculation but those were some strange times when the iron curtain was in place and one needed to transit to/from Berlin and many workarounds were needed.
