Stuff can and does happen. You don't hear a lot about it because in most cases a good team of pilots overcomes the small stuff and gets it on the ground, all safe and sound, and nobody but them and mx knows about it.

If they plan on having pilots sit in the tail I really need to lose weight! LOL - Gotta love those high tech drawings used for the article... I am surprised they didn't just use stick figures!

yeah - the nice thing about glass is that still lets you see outside even when computers or electricity fails.

Reminds me of the old joke about the cabin announcement welcoming passengers to the first fully automated flight with no pilots. "We have reached our crusing altitude of 33,000 feet and turned off the seatbelt sign. This is the first fuly automated plane with no pilots, only a foolproof computer. We assure that nothing can go wrong ... go wrong...go wrong..."
It's way I say, "If it ain't Boeing, I'm not goin'. "

"Kibbles & Bits", "Kibbles & Bits"....hmmmmm....reminds me of some crew meals from the past...(I kid you NOT!).

A can of tuna, a packet of mayonnaisse and some crackers....THAT was a description of an ACTUAL "crew meal" back during the time of "Continental Lite" (please, look it up)!!! Oh WAIT!!! Here it is:

I have my doubts about this one, but I do kind of like the other patent mentioned in the last paragraph, about the trap door that drops potential hijackers into a cell beneath the cabin floor. Maybe go one better and make it an airlock, first into the cell, then on out the bottom.

Airbus has long made know their disdain for a pilot and by bits and pieces finding ways to take them out of the loop. As I understand this, pilots would be on board but would only have a virtual view of the outside via a camera. How many of you have ever had a screen go dark in your face, whether on an aircraft panel, or your PC at the house. Can we say flying blind. A failure here would make "under the hood seem like child's play. I don't think I won't to participate in this.

I believe this idea came from the bean counters without consulting any engineers or pilots for their input. I can see Scarebus putting a big picture window in the front of their airplanes to put the next level of 'ultra' class passengers to charge them 10X what a first class passenger currently pays.....they will get a panoramic view of the earth just before the computers nose the aircraft into a building, side of a hill or another aircraft when the pilot's viewscreen goes blank.

I do have a question here though; all kidding aside, if they still have the pilots on board and flying the plane, where is the savings? except maybe in the windscreen area but then that would be offset by the cost of screen/computer? Maybe I'm missing something unless this is just a first step toward a pilotless aircraft; either that or they really have some computer salesman that has some stroke. LOL

No Forward Windshields to break, Since people would be forward of the crew, the crew would no longer be the first ones to the crash site... I think they are looking at a pilotless aircraft. There philosophy has always been the computer should have prioty over the pilot and they have proven this time and time again. They believe too much in automation. I think it is very funny to have a pilot located in the tail of the aircraft in the Vertical Stab.

I am certainly glad they patented this, as I would hate to see someone else steal it... This idea needs to go underground... WAY UNDERGROUND....

Sad part is that some of these Airbus slugs would talk about how great it was as they sat down in the tail. Maybe they should not have patented it and let somebody steal it. LOL

Sounds like a not-so subtle concept to move the pilot to a ground station somewhere. Then the next step is to automate the ground station.

I think this is a terrible and scary idea. There's something comforting knowing your flight crew is in the front of the plane. Boarding and knowing they were in the aft portion or under the deck would be really creepy to me. I seriously would have a hard time flying commercial knowing that.

What is there to be scared of other than the famous Microsoft "Blue Screen Of Death", Auto Pilot failure, or one of his Monitors to go blank, or even a power failure....

Besides, this would be better for the crew in the case of a crash.. LOL, it would be harder to blame it on pilot error and they would no longer be the first to get to the crash seen... :)

I think I soiled myself reading that Sparkie....lol I hope Airbus doesn't destroy my love of flying. And I just started flight school too! But I don't think I can sit in the tail of a 1978 Cessna 172....lol

They've already proven that smart cars can be hacked to their brakes stop working. See this 2013 article: http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/09/04/hackers-find-weaknesses-in-car-computer-systems/

I do not want to fly in a plane that doesn't have a human in the cockpit that can at least try and override or correct a hack.

Well, according to this, there would be pilots on board; they just would not have a real life look out the windshield; all on camera. Hence they could locate the cockpit anywhere in the plane.
