This is really not that incredible. GE and PRATT has been doing this sort of things for many years.
As I recall, Boeing used a 5 engined model 707 which was outfitted with the center engine for the model 727 mounted on the side of the fuselage in its test program. I don't know if the engine was already certified and just needed installation testing, but it could have been used for the engine certification also. It looked really strange with the down drafted inlet duct installed.
Very rightly mentioned that with new times come new ideas. Which in turn give rise to new challenges to faced .
Evolution in the testing techniques can not remain untouched by times. And rightly new methods have to be evolved simultaneously ! For better and more indepth testing for more assured performances and safer flying .
