Confessions of a regional jet pilot

Размещено

This story needs to be repeated. It needs to be told over and over and over again, until something is really done to fix it! The more people know about it, the better the chance that that will actually happen! The manipulation of the regs made this possible. The Airline business needs fixing. Politicians and Management needs to be ashamed! (www.foxnews.com) Ещё...

it is a sad reality, but I guess once these young pilots get up in the air all that goes away :)

You would think so, but not right away. It takes a very long time in some cases for them to be able move up. In the meantime, they would be making more money at Mc Donalds!

This doesn't surprise me at all, but it is a great article

This seemed familiar as soon as I started reading it. That's because it was familiar. I'm certain if we go back a few months, we'll see this has been posted at least once before. The publication date was in February.

Still a good read.

Ticket prices? These young pilots are dedicated professionals and should be accorded the support they need to do their very best for the safety of the flying public!

Although the numbers can't be compared too closely, it's standard for new doctors to get paid relatively poorly and work long hours in their entry level positions as well. Young pilots similarly build up their experience in these lower pay positions before moving up to the coveted mainline spots. One might also argue that the low starting pay is intentionally done to help filter out people who are not truly dedicated to role.

Nonsense. It is just a way for those in charge to fill up their pockets at the expense of others! Medical schools have also been called to task on these same similar practices and have set a poor example at the expense of patients as well as the doctors!

However, when a doctor closes the door with his patient, he is only dealing with one life at a time. When the cockpit door gets closed, you are responsible for 50+ people at a time, 4 to 5 times a day.

exactly....and do believe that doctor has plenty of insurance in case something goes wrong

Yes, and it is the cost of that insurance that has made routine medical care so expensive. It has also driven dedicated doctors to rethink medical practice as a viable profession.

One could argue the view that the high cost is there to keep undisirables out but on the flip side there are those like myself that see the pay as a slap in the face...I would be more than happy to to fly for 50k a year but with a family to support, the unstable market and the fact that I already make 45K per fueling trucks and working on trailers I just can't justify taking such a huge step back in pay on top having to pay back a loan of that amount...I wanted to fly professionally but the fact is until they do something about the industry more and more people are going to have the same idea...Heck when I was set on wanting to finish up I was the guy that often said I wouldn't mind flying a 210 and then one day moving up to Falcon 20 or Lear Jet hauling freight; that was really all I wanted to to do..I never really had the desire to fly the big iron.

What part of that do you think needs fixing? The salary gap, or the regionals operating with mainline branding? Of course you already know what's going to happen to ticket prices if you want to increase salaries.

screw ticket prices that is what got us to this point and one of the reasons people really can't justify learning how to fly....If you can't afford to fly then you should drive or stop complaining that you can't find a ticket from KCLT to KLAX for under $200..Tell me whats right about investing in an education that after you finish you then have to be build 1500TT to really be able to use on top of only getting paid around $25000 a year. Also even after you have put in your time you are always worrying about the next wave of furloughs, mergers, and pay cuts.

Right on! Let them know! Speak up! Expose the iniquity and the abuse! It's worst then the young starlet in Hollywood who has to deal with the casting couch! How's that for an analogy?

Ticket prices? The unrealistic way the airlines have been pricing their services are exactly what is driving them out of business! Just because management is caught in this downward spiral doesn't give them the right to mistreat their employees while they take them down with them.

If there were a shortage of new pilots willing to take those low paying salaries, then the regional airlines would naturally be forced to raise the pay rate. However, there is actually an over supply of low-time pilots (and diminishing supply of high-time pilots as they retire) so that is contributing to the lower pay. For every regional pilot that walks away there are 10 more waiting to take his/her place despite the $20k salary.

Here's a decent page written by another pilot about the oversupply and its effect on entry level salaries -- http://thetruthabouttheprofession.weebly.com/common-myths-about-the-profession.html

I am on wifes phone right now but I will read the article when I get home..I find it hard to believe there will ever be a pilot shortage even with the military turning out less pilots. In my opinion there is an abundance of furloughed pilots right now and american pilots flying overseas. We will just have to wait and see what happens after the older guys start retiring..I did most of my training in 2002 and over the course of 10 yrs I have the cost go from 39000 at ATP to 59000

Pales in comparison to the United $2 Billion Anticipated 2012 Earnings Report!

The disheartening thing is that I know a guy who flies for United and about 3-4 yrs ago he took a pay cut, lost most of his pension and downsized to a smaller plane. The fun part of his week is having to depend on his flight up to DC out of Charlotte to get his assigned plane to fly his route....His wife flies for US Airways but the last time I talked to him about her she was still flying the 757 as a FO...Sad part is she'll probably retire as a FO due to all of the mergers US Airways has gone through and is slated to go through again...You have to love this industry to want anything to do with it.

Looks like it takes a lot to continue with this to earn points..But I did note the security question. And I say all go thru security the same! No favors. Just afew examples the FA taking the gun in bag, pilot did the same, and teh guy dressing as a pilot to do flights. Once you alter security for a few you loose it.
